THE DOCTORAL INSTITUTE

Scientific developmentCollaboration among researchers

One driver of research is discussion among researchers.

WITHIN THE RESEARCH UNIT

As a doctoral candidate, the primary place for scientific discussions and exchanges will be your research laboratory. In addition to informal discussions among colleagues, your laboratory will also organise internal or more open seminars (depending on how it is organised), allowing members to present and discuss an aspect of their research.

That said, you must also broaden your scientific horizons beyond your laboratory.

WITHIN THE DOCTORAL SCHOOL

Your doctoral school is also responsible for promoting scientific development so that you can meet other doctoral candidates and more experienced researchers from all of the laboratories affiliated with the doctoral school.

Each doctoral school is organised differently, but this promotion generally takes the form of an annual conference, often called "Doctoral School Days", which is also an opportunity for doctoral candidates to present their work in the form of a poster or oral presentation.

These meetings are essential to your integration into your scientific community. They allow you to develop your professional network and practice presenting your work in larger arenas such as national or international conferences.

AND BEYOND...

There are many scientific networks around the world.

Depending on your scientific field, there are many structures that promote and develop your community, such as scholarly societies, federations of research units, scientific interest groups (GIS), LABEXes, competitiveness clusters, Carnot institutes, etc.

Through your thesis supervisor and your laboratory colleagues, you will get to know these structures and join those that will allow you to have a scientific dialogue that will enhance your doctoral research project and potentially your future career.
